Zanzibar Day 2 -More Kingfisher Action

Jane wanted to go to one of the turtle sanctuaries as the focal point of the day. We set of with wifi to locate them, and then found the wifi was terrible. We made our way into the middle of Nungwi, and were stood in the middle of a roundabout looking like prize idiots. After turning down several offers of assistance we crumbled and a taxi driver took us to one of the turtle places.

It was a ‘swim with turtles’ experience, the well behaved turtles were in the larger pool with the punters and the ones that had misbehaved were in a smaller pool.

Whilst Jane went in with the turtles I was on photographic duties. I then got rather distracted as a Pied Kingfisher flew in. It was given a hard time by a House Crow, but this meant it changed perches regularly offering different angles for pictures.

Given this wasn’t a birding holiday I felt rather spoiled to get point blank views of two different kingfisher species in the first two days. I think further highlights are going to have to be of the non-kingfisher variety.

Whilst mooching round the hotel grounds in the afternoon I saw a Little Swift hurtling round the sky inland of the hotel complex. It was too far away for any meaningful pictures, but it meant both bird highlights of the day were of the black and white variety.
