Boa Vista – Update

In all honesty it was a bit difficult to blog for a few days because of the way the birding fell. I suspect I caught Rabil Lagoon on one of the best days to be there in recent years, and the day after wasn’t bad either but since then it’s been a bit hard work like all patch birding can be.

I’ve hired a car the second week of the holiday. The delineation was always going to be pronounced as the very middle of the holiday I had to work one day. Following that we had an issue with mould on the walls of the room, and that turned out to be an aircon fault so we’ve been moved. It’s almost like being on a different holiday, which is nice in a way.

As part of that I’ve been going to sites a little further afield. I tried the salinas at Lacacao where the Willet was knocking about last year, and they were rather quiet. I’ve also been to Lacacao sewage pond a couple of times, which whilst not hooching with birds either has been better for variety.

The first visit included a Yellow Wagtail. As they can be it was flighty. This one was in fact too flighty for photographs. So here’s one I prepared earlier, an apparent male thunbergi (Scandinavian breeding) I had on neighbouring Sal in 2017. The bird on this occasion may of course have looked different.

And today I had two birds I’ve not seen on Boa Vista before. One was a Squacco Heron, which I got terrible record shots of I won’t inflict on my readership. The other was a lovely juvenile American Golden Plover. I managed a few nice images of this visitor from across ‘the pond’.
